ADVANCED WRITING: WRITING THE WILD - - KRANE

BACKGROUND ON ARTISTS

You can easily find information on the lives and work of artists by reading the article about them in Oxford Art Online.  This online resource contains several reference works on art. Most important is Grove Art Online, the largest and most comprehensive encyclopedia of the visual arts that has ever been published.  In addition to reading the background information on the artist in the article itself, be sure to check out the bibliography at the end of the article.  It will list for you the books the artist has written and the exhibition catalogs and other publications that contain reproductions of the artist's works.  It will usually contain, too, a list of the most important books and articles that have been written by scholars and critics, evaluating the life and work of the artist.  This list, put together by the expert scholar who wrote the article, will be a big help as you begin to look for critical assessments of the artist's work.
