Web Resources for World Geography
WEB WARNING ABCs
Authority - Is the website from an authoritative source? Check "About Us."
Bias - Is the website trying to sell you goods or an idea?
Currency - Is the information current? Check the website date
Although excellent .org, .com, .net sites exist, use the search engine's Advanced Search to get what might be more
reliable results by limiting the domain name to .gov or .edu -- or use Google Scholar.
Remember, though: .edu websites can be for elementary or middle or high schools, not just colleges and universities, and the items you find can be created by students!
- Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)This U.N. site has links to agriculture-related statistics, country profiles, and information on sustainable development, fisheries, forestry, etc.
- United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)Major topics: poverty reduction, environment/energy, women's empowerment. Within topics: research and publications, fast facts, etc. Or browse by country from "UNDP Around the World" dropdown at top. Caveat: breadth of info can vary; some country info not in English.
- World BankData tab offers stats by country or by topic. Countries tab is information particular to that country; e.g., economics, poverty status, disease, projects, and more. Also, Research tab leads to reports, by country, topice, etc.
- World Health Organization (WHO)Includes A-Z Health Topics links, from Aging to Yellow Fever. Plus a section on Public Health and Environment. Also see Countries tab.
- Global Flow of PeopleGraphics and data that chart migration flows between and within regions (by countries) for five-year periods, 1990 to 2010.
- Human Rights WatchDedicated to preventing discrimination, upholding political freedom, protecting people from inhumane conduct in wartime, and bringing offenders to justice. Areas of concern include arms, children's rights, terrorism, and women's rights.
- World Resources ReportProvides annual report on environmental concerns worldwide: case studies, maps and data such as hydroelectric production, water dependency stats, etc. From UNEP, World Bank, World Resources Institute.
