FASHION, POLITICS, AND ISSUES OF GENDER
ENCYCLOPEDIAS OF FASHION AND CLOTHING
The following encyclopedias are excellent sources for beginning your research on topics dealing with fashion, clothing, and body adornment. The first three are broad in scope and deal with all aspects of these subjects, while the others are narrower in focus and go into more detail on their particular topics.
- Encyclopedia of Clothing and FashionThis three-volume encyclopedia of clothing, costume, and fashion includes articles on body adornment, the fashion industry, the development of fabrics and textile technologies, and the social meanings of dress, as well as representative costumes from a wide range of historical eras.
- Encyclopedia of World Dress and FashionThis 10-volume encyclopedia provides in-depth coverage of clothing and other forms of body adornment throughout the world and from all time periods. It is also available online in the Berg Fashion Library (see below).
- Berg Fashion LibraryThis database provides a wide range of information on dress and body adornment worldwide throughout history. It includes the Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion and other reference works, the full text of nearly 60 other books on fashion, and an extensive collection of photos of human attire from the past and present.
