RSOC 64: Comparative Religion and Environmentalism (Robinson-Bertoni Summer 19)

Getting Started

Welcome to the RSOC 64 Research Module! In this module you'll work through three exercises in support of your upcoming assignments. Specifically, by working through the activities you will be able to:

  1. Apply both divergent (ideation) and convergent (focusing on one path) thinking in order to find a focus for your research project.
  2. Identify and practice two search approaches for identifying faith organizations involved in an environmental issue.
  3. Construct and execute a multi-disciplinary and multi-database search through one search platform.

Exercise 1: Topic Ideation

Share out and discuss the different environmental issues you are individually or collectively considering. Specifically reflect on and jot down the following:

  1. What are the different issues you're considering?
  2. What have you learned from any initial background research on the topic.
  3. How might that research refine your issue focus?
  4. What is the interest level in this topic within the group? Rank it.
  5. How do you think religious, faith, or inter-faith organizations might respond to, influence, or advocate for your top ranked issue? Use the Padlet below to share your ideas with the whole class.

Exercise 2: Organization Ideation

Use this Google Form Worksheet for Exercises 2 and 3. You'll be emailed your answers when you turn it in and we'll share them with Professor Robinson-Bertoni.

Exercise 2 asks you to explore and identify 1-2 other potential organizations using the Suggested Sources page in this Guide. The Yale Forum on Ecology and Religion is a particularly valuable resource. List 1-2 other groups of possible interest.

Exercise 3: Topic Convergence

Now you have a few organizations under consideration and some various environmental issues, you'll continue to refine and converge upon one direction. You'll do so by pre-reading in those topics. This exercise will support your pre-reading through strategic searching in targeted library databases.

Specifically, in Exercise 3 you will construct a multi-disciplinary search using EBSCO databases. You will need to watch Video 1 (7 mins) under "Videos for the Session Activities" and then you will be able to apply the techniques to your own search in Exercise 3.
