Scholarly Journals! Oh my!

By this time in your academic work you have encountered many "scholarly articles." I bet you are still a little confused about them, aren't you?

If you encounter an article in a journal you are not familiar with, there are two things you should do.

Thing One is to visit the homepage of the journal and examine it critically! Read what it says about itself, its stated purpose. Look for information about how to submit an article for publication.

Thing Two is to look the journal up in these two directories of periodicals. The first one gives a lot of good information about all the major professional and research journals in psychology and education. The other is much broader in scope and covers all sorts of journals in all fields, but it does identify peer-reviewed sources.

What KIND of scholarly journal article is this?

Once you have determined that you are working with an academic or scholarly journal, though, you will still encounter a variety of TYPES of articles. Lucky for you, there is a very nice and short video describing these different types and their various uses/purposes. Good to know!
