The mission of the nation’s health protection agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is "to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same."

The Health Resources and Services Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, uses a definition of public health from an Institutes of Medicine report from 1988: "Public health focuses on safeguarding and improving the physical, mental, and social well-being of the community as a whole. The Santa Clara County Public Health Department focuses on protecting and improving the health of communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, disease and injury prevention, and the promotion of sound health policy. The Department is comprised of a highly diverse work force that encompasses many professional disciplines and several main areas of focus. The Department includes over 30 programs and services organized across seven divisions and centers.
