Nam Ling and Ph.D. student Guichun Li (Computer Engineering) with researchers from Huawei Technologies, filed a regular U.S. Patent (from an earlier Provisional U.S. Patent), "Predictive Adaptive Scan Ordering for Video Coding" (application no. 12/905,872, filed October 15, 2010). Tokunbo Ogunfunmi (electrical engineering) and former Ph.D. student Obianuju Ndili have filed an application for a provisional patent titled "Hardware Modified Diamond Search Algorithm for Fast Motion Estimation," Sept. 2011. (From The Buzz 11/11/2011).

Nam Ling (computer engineering), Guichun Li (computer engineering Ph.D. student), and Li Song, Visiting Associate Professor of Computer Engineering, together with researchers from Huawei Technologies, filed two U.S. provisional patents, "Simplification of Mode Dependent Intra Smoothing" and "Reference Pixel Reduction for Intra LM Prediction," on Jan. 19. Guichun Li (PhD student) and Nam Ling (computer engineering), together with Drs. Lingzhi Liu, Jianhua Zheng, and Philipp Zhang (researchers from Huawei Technologies), filed a regular (non-provisional) U.S. patent, "Using MPS to encode extended UDI mode numbers for robustness," in February 2012.
