Koshland San Francisco History Center contains a research collection of books, newspapers and magazines, photographs, maps, posters, archives and manuscript collections, and ephemera, documenting all aspects of San Francisco life and history. The Center is also the archives for the City and County of San Francisco." (from their homepage) Some is online. Most is actually on the 6th floor of the main SFPL!

Thank UC Riverside for this collection of digitized newspapers from all over California and dating back to the first newspaper, in 1846. It's a real mixed bag.
