Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a method of using maps to display and analyze information in many disciplines. GIS gives immediacy and visual understanding to data and statistics, in everything from environmental science and business to history and sociology.

Facility in generating GIS mapping is essential for many careers in environmental science. ENVS 115 focuses "on methods of generating, querying, analyzing, and displaying GIS data utilizing industry standard software. Possible topics include landuse change, pollution, and population growth issues."
