Racial Justice Resources through the SCU Library

The Digital Humanities initiative at SCU connects faculty, staff, and students across departments and schools who use digital methods to conduct research centered on the human, and those who ask humanistic questions of digital tools and methods. DH is deeply interdisciplinary, collaborative, and welcoming to all researchers from across the arts and sciences invested in reflecting on the intersection of the human and digital that is at the core of the identity of The Jesuit University in Silicon Valley.

The 1619 Project, by New York Times Magazine, is "an ongoing initiative from The New York Times Magazine that began in August 2019, the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative." -- description from site

From the site: The Black Women’s Suffrage Digital Collection is a collaborative project to provide digital access to materials documenting the roles and experiences of Black Women in the Women’s Suffrage Movement and, more broadly, women’s rights, voting rights, and civic activism between the 1850s and 1960. The materials in this collection include photographs, correspondence, speeches, event programs, publications, oral histories, and other artifacts.

From the site: Nearly 11 million acres of Indigenous land. Approximately 250 tribes, bands and communities. Over 160 violence-backed treaties and land seizures. Fifty-two universities. With the information provided in this project, you can untangle the powerful and painful strains of myth and money behind the land-grant university system, which broadened access to higher education in the United States.

From the site: This web project accompanies the book Mapping Decline: St. Louis and the Fate of the American City (PennPress, 2008). It presents four interactive series of maps, each touching on a major theme developed in the book.

Mapping Inequality displays "mortgage security" map created by agents of the federal government's Home Owners' Loan Corporation between 1935 and 1940. Areas were given a grade between "A" and "D" to demonstrate how safe an investment in that area would be. Grades were determined based on a number of criteria, including "the racial and ethnic identity and class of residents."These maps and their accompanying documentation helped set the rules for nearly a century of real estate practice. Mapping Inequality...will allow and encourage you to grapple with this history of government policies contributing to inequality.

From the site: This racial dot map is an American snapshot; it provides an accessible visualization of geographic distribution, population density, and racial diversity of the American people in every neighborhood in the entire country. The map displays 308,745,538 dots, one for each person residing in the United States at the location they were counted during the 2010 Census. Each dot is color-coded by the individual’s race and ethnicity. The map is presented in both black and white and full color versions. In the color version, each dot is color-coded by race.
