Scholarly Articles can generally be found in scholarly journals. Not sure what a 'scholarly journal' is? Watch this video: 

Characteristics of a Scholarly Source

When evaluating whether an article from a journal is considered a scholarly source, review these questions. If the answer to most of these is yes, then it is likely scholarly.

  1. Does the journal the article is in have one of the following words in the title: Journal, transactions, Proceedings
  2. Is the journal only published monthly, or bi-annually?
  3. Are the articles in the journal peer reviewed?
  4. Is the intended audience for the journal professors, students, researchers and/or scholars?
  5. Do the articles follow a typical format of: abstract, literature review, methodology, results, and conclusions?
  6. Do the articles have endnotes and/or a bibliography?
  7. Does the journal include very little advertising?
