ENGL 2A: Diversifying Your Sources

Find Background Information

Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, and Other Reference Sources

Encyclopedias, dictionaries and other reference sources are a great way to get started and to find objective, factual background information on your topic from various perspectives. For example, do a search on RACE will bring you articles on "race" from reference sources in anthropology, psychology, sociology, biology, etc.  A similar search on ADVERTISING will bring you articles on sources in business, psychology, ethics, health, and so on.
