Information literacy and Library Essentials Tutorials

Database Searching Basics

This two-part tutorial is an in-depth introduction to database searching using the OmniFile database on the EBSCO platform. It covers a lot of ground, including:

  • reducing your "topic" to key concepts;
  • truncation;
  • "phrase searching";
  • using the multiple search boxes in the EBSCO platform logically;
  • revising initial search using SUBJECT terms;
  • Find-It-@-SCU link to get fulltext.

If you decide to assign this tutorial to your class, be sure to tell students to provide their email when prompted at the end of both parts of the tutorial in order to have their scores emailed to themselves. You can then ask students to turn in this email as proof that they have done the tutorial. As a matter of fact, letting your students know you will be collecting their scores can be an incentive to actually DO the tutorial in a more thoughtful way!
