Becoming Scholars by 100YearOldLibrarian

Create Your Artifact (15 min)

Using the Padlet, create a post. Write about something you know and how you know it. Here are some example topics:

  • Do you like video games? Maybe you can write about the gaming community, the game play, your experience etc.
  • Do you have a lot of experience working on a farm? You can talk about the farming community or the resources needed to sustain a farm.
  • Are you interested in artificial intelligence? Spend time talking about what you know so far.
  • What about fashion? TikTok and it’s influencers? Mental health and dealing with stress? Cultures and ethnic influences? Yes! Write about a topic you know about and how you know!

Be prepared to share with another classmate!

Searching for Sources (15 min)

Now that you have read each other's artifacts, identify the keywords or main points from your classmates writing. Post this as a "Comment" into the Padlet.

Using OneSearch or Google Scholar, do a quick search to find 2 sources that touches on that topic. Post the link to the sources as "Comments" into Padlet.

Skim the article(s) and identify where it agrees/disagrees/brings up a new point about your classmates artifact. You can copy and paste the statements from the articles or summarize.

Regroup & Share (15 min)

With the person who reviewed your artifact, discuss these questions with your classmate:

  • What does your classmate want you to feel, believe or do?
  • Does the artifact written by your classmate contribute to any existing knowledge you already have on that topic? If you did not have any existing knowledge at all on the topic, what new thing did you learn from your classmate’s artifact?
  • What kind of authority does your classmate have on this topic?
  • When would would you want to look for scholarly sources?
  • Did the sources you find agree/disagree with your classmates artifact?

Class Discussion (10 min)

What you just did mirrors the scholarly process!

Now, for the next 2-3 minutes, answer these questions on this Padlet:

  • What did you learn from someone else researching your artifact?
  • Did this fit what you already know about your topic?

Any brave souls want to volunteer to share what they wrote down?
