CHST 6: Information Literacy in Child Studies (O'Brien)

TASK 1: Get yourself a Matrix!

Click the link below to my sample matrix:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1R0mAHenSEVnNSbT4f1tWtALbgL4COD4yhT9bPeNw950/edit?usp=sharing

Immediately make yourself one:

and name it with your name:

Then, on your matrix add a row for the work we are about to do:

Finally, click the button in the upper right corner and share it with me, Gail Gradowski, and your professor!

TASK 2: Add basics about your REVIEW article to YOUR Matrix using PsycInfo

STEP 1: Find your review article in the PsycInfo database.

STEP 2: Block-&-copy the APA citation from the PsycInfo record into the first box in your matrix.

STEP 3: Use the PsycInfo record to get the information for the YEAR, DISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE, GEOGRAPHY & METHODS columns of your Matrix.

STEP 4: Get a link to the fulltext of your article (Permalink in the column to the right of the abstract if it is in PsycInfo); otherwise use the Find-It-@-SCU to get to the fulltext and get a link there. Add that to your Matrix (it's the last column).

TASK 3: Meet the Web of Science (WoS for short!)

STEP 1: Enter the Web of Science (see link above).

STEP 2: Block-&-Copy the title of your review article from the Matrix into the main search box. Clean up/delete any punctuation in the article title.

STEP 3: Cross your fingers that it comes up! (If it doesn't, try your other article!)

STEP 4: Click on the article and scan the full record (scroll through it).

STEP 5: Capture the ISSN and the IMPACT FACTOR for your Matrix from the JOURNAL INFORMATION given there.

TASK 4: Exploit the Citation Network; or, Feel the POWER!

Unless your review article is really, really recent, you should see Citations in the Citation Network box to the right of your article's WoS entry, looking something like the one pictured here.

In this example, 62 articles in are citing this one. The 109 is the number of cited references in the article itself.

In a sense, 62 is going forward in time and 109 is going backwards in time.

STEP 1: Click the Citations to begin browsing the articles that cited your article.

NOTE: Notice the options to Refine Results to the left of the entries. If your number is really large, you might consider these. Be cautious about adding additional search terms ... easy to miss things!

STEP 2: Scroll through and try to find a relevant article ... read the abstract carefully to make sure it is relevant! This is a very INTERNATIONAL database .... depending on your topic, where the research was done could be an issue.

STEP 3: Once you find one you like, add it to your Matrix, filling out as many columns as you can. You should be able to add these for sure:

APA Citation/ Year/ Disciplinary Perspective/ Geography/ ISSN/ Impact Factor

STEP 4: Click the  button to search for the fulltext. The  button is actually Find-It-@-SCU! When you get to the fulltext, add the link to your Matrix.

TASK 5: Finding who cited something NOT in the WoS; or, this is tricky, but very cool!

What if you found a great article searching PsycInfo or some other database but it isn't in WoS? You can still see who cited it. And, people cite things other than articles, like books, chapters in books, reports ... you name it!

You can search these in WoS, but it gets a bit tricky!

You need to do a CITED REFERENCES search:

This article (viewed as an APA citation):

Klein, M. B., & Pierce, J. D., Jr. (2009). Parental care aids, but parental overprotection hinders, college adjustment. Journal of College Student Retention: Research, Theory and Practice, 11(2), 167–181.

would look like this as a Cited Reference search:

The devil is, indeed, in the details here! Notice how the authors' names are entered and the use of the *.

If it is your lucky day, your search will yield a set of results. Scan those for matches. Because our search is limited to the authors, abbreviated, and the year, you often get unrelated items. Scan the Titles for matches, marking them by checking the box to the left of the entries. Then click See Results.
