The Internet is awash with free web sites dealing with clothing and fashion, but most are commercial sites designed to sell something. Many of the rest are of questionable reliability and should be used with caution for academic research. The following is a site that stands out as one of the best on the web.

The Costume Gallery
This well-organized site contains over 5,000 web pages and thousands of images. It provides good coverage of the history of costume and the fashion and textile industries. While the contents of the site may be browsed for free, visitors must pay a "small subscription fee" in order to view the articles and images on the site.
