Introduction to Library Resources for Engineers

General library information applicable to all engineering disciplines.

What are Course Reserves?

Sometimes an instructor will have materials on Course Reserves for students to utilize. This is a great way to save money because you do not need to purchase the book and you don't have to worry about the material being checked out for an entire quarter.

Course Reserves can be books and DVDs and are materials that have a checkout period which is shorter than those of regular items in order to ensure equal access to material for all students in a course. When a book says online that it's in " University Course Reserves, Library Help Desk" it means the item is being held at the Help Desk on the first floor.

Check-out Duration of Course Reserves

Unlike other materials in the library, Course Reserves have shorter check-out times to ensure the resources can be easily accessible to everyone taking the course.

Items are available on a first come, first serve basis and cannot be recalled or held. Depending on what the instructor has specified, reserves can be checked out for 4-hour or 24-hour usage. You can borrow up to 3 reserve items at a time, however, most course reserves cannot be renewed, meaning you cannot re-check out the material immediately after returning it to the Help Desk.

Course Readings on Camino

If your instructor told you that your course reserves can be found online, they most likely are referring to your course page in Camino

Also known as e-reserves, electronic reserves are scanned copies or electronic documents that are available to students registered in the class.
